Etnia Pousada & Boutique
Laid back and stylish, Etnia Pousada is the concept of one italian , CorradoTini and the brasilian André Zanonato. who had the inspired idea of sharing Trancoso’s unique appeal with travellers who love off the beaten track destinations to ultra-luxury resorts.
Trancoso, originally a fishing village in Bahia, roughly 15 hours north of Rio de Janeiro, has always had a reputation for attracting creative and bohemian characters. This, and its spectacular beaches have contributed to Trancoso becoming something of an iconic destination in a country that is hardly short of breathtaking landscapes.
Etnia Pousada’s owners have managed to strike the right balance between design (described as a mix between kitsch and authenticity), atmosphere (enhanced by superb service) and the area’s natural beauty (the kind of “living at the edge of the jungle” experience Brazil offers effortlessly). This has paid off famously – the establishment has the kind of impressive and dedicated following of appreciative visitors that would make 5 star competitors weep with envy.
So what’s different about the pousada?
For starters, it offers exclusivity without pretension.
Imaginative and quirky as this may be, however, it is not the only thing that makes Etnia Pousada & Boutique the huge hit it is (visitors invariably review it in glowing terms).
The staff – unaffected, unfailingly cheerful and genuinely solicitous (“nothing is too much”) – are very much part of the magical mix that separates excellent hotels from those offering unforgettable experiences (Etnia Pousada & Boutique fits firmly into the latter category).
Then, there is the intangible – the ambiance. This place simply oozes ambiance, what with its large pool and open air restaurant offering the freshest fish and Mediterranean fusion cuisine; some 20 minutes walk away; the short walk to the Quadrado (Trancoso’s main square, a UNESCO heritage landmark), the fabulous massage treatments ; the stunning location and lush tropical forest that are an integral part of Etnia Pousada’s unique charm….
The area offers ample scope for exploration and activities too, whether it’s horse riding or visiting local landmarks, such as Corumbau (a tropical farm), Cabralia and Porto Seguro.
Sustainable tourism has been quietly but inexorably gathering momentum in the last decade or so. Etnia Pousada has embraced it virtually since its inception, making environmental and resource preservation one of its main priorities.
Linked to the International Ecotourism Society, an international organization that promotes ecotourism around the globe, the Etnia Pousada& Boutique also participates in the Association of Sports Eco Trancoso, a charity that promotes sport as a vector of development for the region, offering free classes in various sports for the youth of the local community.
From Sao Paulo, Salvador or Rio de Janeiro, take a flight to Porto Seguro, on the southern coast of Bahia. After landing in Porto Seguro, there are two ways to get to the Pousada: by car and ferry or by helicopter.
